An independent survey conducted by the Save Life Foundation has revealed that over 196 migrant workers have died in raod accidents since the lockdown was imposed in March, 2020. The study shows that migrants who were forced to walk back for lack of any transport arrangements met with at least 1,364 accidents resulting in death and severe injury. In May 16 workers were run over by a train in the wee hours of the morning at Aurangabad, Maharashtra.
A survey conducted in Manesar and Bawal Industrial belt has revealed that over 76% workers did not receive wages for the month of April when the lockdown began while 38% were not paid full wages. The non-payment of wages despite government orders aggravated the situation and pushed workers towards starvation and death. Furthermore, relief packages rolled out by states did not take into account migrant workers which added to the distress.
